Light, shadow, and surface treatment are as much the protagonists in McGannon's paintings as the figures themselves. He begins with the intimate and traditional experience of working from life in the studio. McGannon removes all but a few clues as to the identity of the figures, evoking a sense of the universal and infusing the work with metaphysical import. A distressed, abstracted surface dominates the background and often encroaches upon the figures themselves, further evoking a sense of the passage of time, and asserting the paintings as beautifully crafted objects.
